HISTORIC FORT STEUBEN, FIRST FEDERAL LAND OFFICE

Saturday, August 9, 2008

One-Day Tour with One Meal

$89.00 per person
$84.00 (18 & Under)

This new “Frontier Tour” begins right where Steubenville began . . . at Historic Fort Steuben, the fort that opened the Northwest Territory to the nation. Built in 1786 by the First American Regiment, the fort was for the protection of surveyors who had been sent by the Congressional Congress to map out the area. The site selected was most desirable for a military defense since it was founded on the east by the Ohio River and laid on a slope of land that formed a natural amphitheater around the perimeter. We’ll also be touring the first Federal Land Office, built in 1801, and a pioneer home. You should also enjoy seeing the massive 2 1/2 ton bell from the Jefferson County Courthouse.

As we enjoy a luncheon at Froehlich’s Classic Corner, you’ll be viewing two of Steubenville’s best-known murals. Afterwards we’ll be seeing several of the twenty-five murals that are painted on the outside walls of buildings to artfully capture the city’s rich heritage, as it grew over the past two hundred years. Other stops will be made at historic sites including collections from the Civil War and Ohio Presidents.
